US Defense Budget: Programs, Trends and the Future
15 March 2011On 14 February, the US Department of Defense (DoD) announced its request for a USD670.6 billion total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12), marking a about USD38 billion decline from its previous year's proposal as US forces withdraw from Iraq and federal budgets are reduced.
US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said the DoD is asking Congress for a USD553 billion base budget - about USD4 billion more than last year - and another USD117.6 billion in overseas contingency operations (OCO) funding to finance theatre operations, which is a USD42 billion decrease from the OCO money requested last year.
