Armed and Dangerous: The Design, Development and Future Roles and Missions of UCAVs in the United States
Wednesday 4 August 2010Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) armed with Hellfire missiles have become absolutely critical to the US military’s anti-Al Qaeda operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border. Looking into the future, this webinar will explore how unmanned aircraft will evolve in the coming decades and what role, if any, it will have in future conflicts. Topics for discussion include the design, development and potential future roles and missions of unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). While America has the knowledge and industrial base to push unmanned technology to the limit, US policy, international law and the unpredictable character of future conflicts could all put serious restraints on UCAV use.
This webinar will address some key questions surrounding UCAV development and use, including:
- What is the definition of a UCAV and how has that definition evolved over time?
- What is the state of current UCAV technology development in the United States?
- Who are the big industry players in the UAV/UCAV market?
- What is the interest level inside the Pentagon – particularly in the US Air Force and US Navy – in terms of UCAV development?
- Is UCAV design and development likely to be an industry growth sector in the United States?
- Do UCAVs have a role in a dynamic strategic environment in which the next war is unlikely to look like Iraq or Afghanistan?
- What are the technical challenges to future UCAV development?
- What are the policy limitations to UCAV development and use?
