Middle Eastern Naval Procurement

Middle Eastern Naval Procurement

Tuesday 27 April 2010

With naval procurement spending across Middle Eastern nations set to peak in 2011-12, this webinar will examine the major surface vessel programmes that are coming to fruition and look ahead to future prospects for the next 10 years or more.

Egypt and the United Arab Emirates both have billion-dollar naval procurement programmes underway, the former involving the acquisition of four Ambassador III-class fast missile craft and the latter a force of six Baynunah corvettes. Both these efforts will be dwarfed when Saudi Arabia eventually decides to order replacements for three classes of frigate, corvette and fast attack craft dating back to the 1980s, at a cost of up to USD6 billion. However, the lack of an indigenous naval shipbuilding industry (there are just three commercial naval constructors in the region: two in Israel and one in the UAE) means that there will continue to be major opportunities for European and US shipbuilders and designers, perhaps working in partnership with local companies.
