Naval Mine Countermeasures

Taking the man out of the mine field:
The increasing use of unmanned systems in
mine countermeasures

Thursday 18 November 2010

Naval mine countermeasures (MCM) is undergoing a period of revolutionary change.

The major Western navies are entering a period of transformation in MCM with these operations transferring from specialist platforms to multirole vessels using modular, unmanned off board systems. This allows MCM forces to deploy ‘in stride’ with a naval task force facilitating transition of choke points and theatre access for amphibious operations. At the same time, other navies without these operational requirements are upgrading existing dedicated MCM vessels or constructing new-build low-signature ships with new-generation unmanned systems which make MCM operations safer by providing greater stand off for the vessel from the mine threat.

Editor of Jane’s Unmanned Maritime Vehicles and Systems Charles Hollosi and Jane's Navy International Editor, Jon Rosamond will present an assessment of the key trends driving the increasing use of unmanned systems in MCM over the coming decade.
