Future Southeast Asian Naval Procurement Programmes
4 June 2010The seminar will briefly outline the geo-strategic situation in Southeast Asia. This will provide the background for how governments in the region view their military position and how this affects decisions on naval procurement. The focus of the seminar will be on future naval procurement plans and not on existing programmes that are already in progress. This will offer an insight into the kind of materiel that will be sought by Southeast Asian navies over the next decade.
With many ageing warships dominating the inventories of Southeast Asian navies there are many upgrade programmes that may be undertaken as a cheaper way of maintaining a capable fleet than the procurement of new ships. Details will be provided about the new submarine arms race in Southeast Asia showing which countries are involved and what they hope to buy; surface ship acquisition plans and if states in the region are capable of domestic design and construction of warships; as well as an overview of the market by country and ship-type.
