Terrorism Trends
This seminar will review year-to-date global terrorism and insurgency trends, based upon events recorded by Jane’s Terrorism & Insurgency Centre (JTIC) in its terrorism database. The presentation, delivered by JTIC analysts, will be in three parts:
Global Trends: The first section will provide an overview of trends in sub-state violence at the global level during the first half of 2010. In addition, the talk will highlight a number of noteworthy developments in individual countries over the period.
Country Focus: In the light of the ongoing instability in Somalia, and the growing importance attached to the theatre by the international community, the second section will provide an update on the continually evolving situation on the ground. The talk will provide a breakdown of the major militant groups vying for power within the country’s ungoverned space, and examine the shifting alliances and rivalries that have shaped the dynamics of the conflict over the past year.
Tactical focus: The final section will focus on Europeans travelling to join militant Islamist groups in foreign countries, an issue which remains a key concern for Western security officials. Past precedent suggests at least some will be persuaded to return home to carry out terrorist attacks. Pakistan’s tribal areas remain the primary training ground for international terrorists although returnees form Yemen and Somalia could also emerge as established training grounds.
The presentation will include a comprehensive question and answer session during which you will be able to explore and discuss the topic with Jane's analysts in greater detail.
