A Year in Review
2009 was an interesting year by any measure, with continued armed conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur, and beyond; changes in the US administration; an increase in piracy; and a global recession. For the first time, IHS Jane's will bring its annual reviews to the live Intelligence Centre seminar format, moderated by Group Publishing Director Sean Howe.
Jane’s Defence Weekly Editor, Peter Felstead will begin by looking at the major military geopolitical events around the world in 2009, highlighting their significance and the potential ramifications for 2010. Among the events and issues highlighted will be:
- Major events relating to worldwide conflict
- Other significant military-geopolitical developments
- Major defence programme milestones
- Major developments in the defence industry worldwide.
This will be followed by a presentation from Jane's Defence Industry reporter, Matthew Bell who will review the defence industry activity in 2009:
- Defence stocks outperformed wider indices during turbulence of 07/08, but generally tracked FTSE100 / DOW30 throughout 2009
- Defence Sector Mergers & Acquisitions: 2009 Trends - Largest defence firms enjoyed “almost unfettered access” to lending, while record defence spending of previous years created cash rich firms
- Defence sector not entirely insulated from wider world, although better placed than adjacent industries to weather storms
- Larger defence companies provided a safe haven for investors in terms of debt, although less so in terms of equities
The seminar will conclude with a presentation from Regan Chambers, Director of Jane’s DS Forecast Analysis Group and will look at international defence market developments, including:
- Market Growth and Direction
- Market Drivers
- Market Leaders
- How the markets look for the future
