Beyond Mach 5: To What Extent will Hypersonics Research and Development Lead to Practical Military Applications Over the Next Decade?

Historically, flying at hypersonic speeds - defined as mach 5 or higher - has been a little more than a dream for rocket scientists and aviation enthusiasts eager for new breakthroughs in 21st century flight. Today, however, hypersonic vehicles are getting closer to reality thanks to the US military's growing interest and financial investments in the technology. This online seminar will explore the ongoing efforts to develop hypersonic propulsion technology, the potential applications for this technology, and the likelihood that hypersonic propulsion will find its way into operational use with the US military. Navigating the Emerging Markets: Saudi Arabia
2 February 2011
Saudi Arabia – long ranked as one of the world’s largest importers of defence materiel – is facing a bow-wave of procurement spending, with forecast investment of USD83 billion over the coming five years. Indications of wider procurement relationships have shifted sparked significant interest from global contractors, although major challenges remain. Procurement practices are opaque; offset demands are on course to become more burdensome; and the Kingdom’s continued heavy reliance on hydrocarbon exports presents significant risks. IHS Jane’s will offer both an assessment of the Saudi Arabian market, and highlight the obstacles to success. (more)
Navigating the Emerging Markets: Brazil

Brazilian defence procurement expenditure is on course to climb more than 60 per cent over the next four years to underpin a vast military modernisation effort. Opportunities presented by the Brazilian market have shifted the country to the fore of the strategies of global defence materiel producers. There are significant challenges ahead, however, ranging from politicised procurement and issues of transparency to meeting ambitious offset demands. IHS Jane’s will offer both an assessment of the Brazilian market, and highlight the obstacles to success. (more)

A Year in Review - Defence
18 January 2011

The impending UK defence industrial policy green paper is scheduled to be published before the end of the year. IHS Jane’s is aware of how much this will affect the industry, with questions arising over jobs, skills, capabilities and corporate strategies and on Tuesday 11 January will be hosting an online seminar to digest the green paper; hear our expert analysts’ initial thoughts; and first impressions. Navigating the new frontiers: The challenges of defence trade in India and the United Arab Emirates
28 October 2010
Moribund defence spending across the Western world has put a renewed emphasis on the more dynamic emerging markets as global contractors look to maintain growth in the face of tough trading conditions. The principal new frontiers – offering high forecast growth, varied opportunities and diverse supplier relationships – are Brazil, India, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia (BIUS). The fast-growth four feature in the business strategies of the bulk of the larger European and North American defence contractors. Success in the BIUS countries will be neither straight forward nor universal, however: competition will be intense and opportunities are likely to be fragmented. (more)

Managing Soldier Burden
20 October 2010
This Intelligence Centre seminar will present an investigation of the issues surrounding equipping and supporting the modern dismounted soldier, and the pursuit of solutions to reduce their physical, thermal and power burden. In Afghanistan’s Helmand province dismounted soldiers are suffering increasing back and leg injuries caused by routinely carrying extraordinary weights of sometimes over 70 kg (150 lb) in punishingly high temperatures and altitudes. The constant incremental acquisition of new pieces of equipment for operational requirements exacerbates the issue, as the additions are usually bought off the shelf from a variety of manufacturers and rarely therefore seamlessly integrate with other systems. The 2009 presidential elections in Iran will be keenly watched in the West. There is speculation that the results of the ongoing US policy review toward the Middle Eastern state will not be revealed until the identity of the next Iranian president is clear. What is almost certain, however, is that the incumbent president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is being challenged from both the ranks of reformists but also hardliners among far right Islamists. Meanwhile, there is also a debate about the utility of a “national unity government” given the external pressures Tehran is facing.
