Energy, Environment, Defense
and Security 2011

Engaging the Aerospace, Defense and Security Sector in Energy, Environment and Counter-Climate Change Markets

The defense market worldwide is worth a trillion dollars annually. The energy and environmental market is worth at least eight times this amount. The former is set to contract as governments address the economic realities of the coming decade; the latter is set to expand exponentially, especially in the renewables arena.

Far from being excluded from this opportunity, the aerospace, defense and security sector is gearing up to address what looks set to become its most significant adjacent market since the strong emergence of the civil/homeland security business almost a decade ago.

And this is entirely reasonable. From satellites that monitor the environment to submarine sensors that plot the thickness of sea-ice and ocean temperature variations, the A&D industry has probably amassed more data on the environment than any other industrial sector. It knows about wind-patterns, critical changes in eco-systems and greenhouse gas concentrations. And it knows about energy. Exploiting skills amassed over decades, defense contractors are now addressing ‘smart grid’ technologies for electricity markets and coming up with novel clean energy solutions.

Perhaps most significantly of all, in the long term, aerospace, defense and security companies have the potential to ally with government and academia in helping to address global climate change challenges – using their modelling, simulation, system-of-systems analysis and engineering skills to powerful effect.

Engaging the industry at this level would amount to its ‘next giant leap’ – meeting a challenge that would ripple through the sector – alongside numerous others - at all levels; a challenge that would far eclipse the last time the industry came together comprehensively to address a rallying national objective with global implications: placing a man on the moon.

Energy and Environmental Markets:
Defense Sector Engagement - Online Seminar

Join us at E2DS’11 to analyze and discuss:

  • The scale of the opportunity in energy and environmental markets – and the value this represents to the aerospace and defense industry
  • How to engage the ‘customer’ – national governments and government departments, both in and outside the military
  • How aerospace, defense and security companies are already adapting their businesses to the new opportunities in energy and environment
  • The valuable contribution that the sector can make to our understanding of climate change – and how to mitigate its effects

Our goal is to provide conference attendees with an inspired and inspirational agenda – a ‘roadmap’ for how to engage all sections of the private and public arenas - with the aerospace, defense and security sector at its hub. This will translate into insights that will help to shape your business plans in 2011 and beyond.

Key Themes

  • The unique capabilities of the aerospace, defense and security sector: system-of-systems analysis and integration, systems engineering and C2 expertise applied to energy and environmental management
  • Earth observation – the sector’s top-down contribution to our understanding of the environment and starting point for collaboration with academia and government
  • The scale of the environmental challenge – what we know and what we don’t know and how the aerospace and defense sector can contribute
  • National and international energy security plans – the key role of the aerospace, defense and security sector, in tandem with armed forces, in securing energy supply
  • The need for collaboration between science, politics and the private sector worldwide – and how, where and why this is already happening in key areas
  • Innovation from within the A&D industry and from the cross-fertilization of ideas with other sectors: for example, financial, general engineering, utilities and insurance

Conference Audience

The conference is aimed at a high profile international audience of senior executives and decision-makers spanning multiple sectors and government departments – with energy, environment and security at the heart of their agendas:

  • Senior executives responsible for shaping and implementing strategy within aerospace, defense and security companies
  • Policy and acquisition officials from defense, energy, environment, interior and agriculture ministries and other government agencies
  • Senior company technologists and executives from research and development organizations
  • Cross-sector participants from banking, insurance, utilities, energy and general engineering companies
  • National and trade press

All government and military personnel are invited to attend this event on a complimentary basis.

Why attend?

The conference will provide attendees with an insight into the issues surrounding the adjacent market opportunities of the energy and environmental market for the aerospace, defense and security industries:

  • Identify promising business opportunities in an expanding sector
  • Hear the scientific and political case for decisive action on energy and climate issues
  • Network with key policy, strategy and business leaders
  • Gain unique insights into international thinking in this key emerging market
  • Help set the agenda on energy and environmental issues in the coming decade and beyond
