Star of the show
UAENS Al Hesen, the first Baynunah corvette to be built in country by Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), is the undoubted star of the show on the NAVDEX waterfront. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, officially inaugurated Al Hesen alongside at NAVDEX on 20 February.

IDEX award winners
Germany’s Rheinmetall and the UAE’s ADSB have won ‘Best Exhibition Stand’ awards for IDEX and NAVDEX, respectively, at a gala dinner held in the presence of HH Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Local spending continues
On the second trade day of IDEX, the UAE government announced another 14 contracts, worth a further AED4 billion, adding to the 21 contracts totalling around AED4 billion announced on the first day.

QinetiQ in Saudi venture
QinetiQ has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) in Saudi Arabia to collaborate on a range of research and technology development programmes, which could include autonomy, robotics, sensors, communications and remote sensing.

Jordan orders Hashim anti-tank weapon
The Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF) has awarded Jordan Russian Electronic Systems Company (JRESCO) a contract for an undisclosed amount to supply new RPG-32 antitank weapons. JRESCO was formed in 2005 by the local King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) and Rosoboronexport of Russia to develop the RG-32 shoulder-launched grenade rocket system.

Fire Scout to get bigger
From FY12, the US Navy plans to move to a larger and more capable version of its Fire Scout vertical takeoff unmanned air system (VTUAS). The MQ-8 system has until now been based on a Schweizer/Sikorsky 333 airframe, but future production will use the Bell 407.

KMW and Daimler sign service contract
Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), prime contractor for the Leopard 2 tank and many other armoured vehicles, has signed an agreement with Daimler under which KMW will now take over support for all the latter’s tactical wheeled vehicles currently deployed on overseas operations. Mercedes- Benz already works with KMW on a number of projects.

RMK Marine (Hall 10, Stand D10), part of the Koç Group, is moving forward with its programme to construct four new 88m search and rescue (SAR) vessels for the Turkish Coast Guard.
